There Was Nothing For Christmas, But I Received Everything

Was there a toy or thing you always wanted as a child, during the holidays or on your birthday, but never received? Tell us about it.
Thanks for opening the wound, Daily Prompt.
You have to be careful with these Daily Prompts. They might start something in motion that can’t be stopped without intervention, drugs, a bottle of Jack Daniels, or a SWAT team.

But seriously.

It almost seems strange to me at this point in my life, but there was a time when I was eight years old and my family had nothing.
You don’t know poverty until your birthday or Christmas. I can easily understand why Christmas is often referred to as the most depressing time of the year. For my family and me it meant having or receiving nothing.
Mom worked hard, but faced frequent layoffs where she worked. Dad did not have the mental verve to recover from a failed business. He sunk deeply into despair and “the bottle.”
I recall one particular day while playing with only a few toys I expressed the desire for more. I suppose it was a subtle hint with Christmas looming.
In one of Dad’s infrequent sober moments he drew both sides of automobiles, trains, trucks, wagons, and stagecoaches on cardboard. He cut them out and folded them so they stood on their own.
They were the best toys I ever had.
What was unavailable in the way of manufactured toys was made up for in imagination.
The best gift I got that year was no gift at all. I was allowed to develop and explore my imagination.
As long as you have imagination…

  1. SO TRUE! We sold our business and had just a few extra bucks so we bought a new fridge and a couple of other handy dandy things we needed.? I set up the boxes in the pole barn and cut doors and windows that swung in and out. Our daughter, about 5 or 6, played with those and loved having her friends play there. She was devastated when we finally had to toss them out and burn them. We all reflect on that with fondest memories.

Blather away, if you like.
