Do I believe in reincarnation? No, and here is why:
The belief in reincarnation presupposes that something lives on after the death of the body, such as the soul.
That idea has been around for a long, long time. It is woven in the fabric of Hinduism. Plato as well as other Greek philosophers believed in its existence. It has found its way in some form or another in nearly every religion.
The Bible gives an interesting insight and a possible origin of this teaching.
The account in the Bible of Eve being tricked into eating a forbidden fruit and thus disobeying God gives a clue. Recall that it was Eve who said to the serpent (as played by the Devil) God said eating from the tree would mean certain death. The Devil said, “You will not die.” (Genesis 3:1-5) Basically is that not the teaching of reincarnation; you don’t die.
What about all the people who claim to be reincarnated and lived past lives? They claim to recall events and incidents with clarity and accuracy. They are able to piece together and describe surroundings with never having been there.
Some are dazzled by the ability of clairvoyants to find a lost person or body, but the reality is their ability to do this is at best guessing. (Where is Jimmy Hoffa and Amelia Earhart?) Likewise a person being able to give certain details of a previous life is not proof of reincarnation.
As mentioned before at the urging of the Devil, Eve ate of the fruit and did die. In fact, the Bible says that God was the giver of life, defined what life is, regulated it, and can restore it. Eve was hoodwinked into thinking she had control of those things.
Of note, the Bible states that the soul dies (Ezekiel 18:4) . It does not live on. The Bible says Adam was given life – not a soul (Genesis 2:7). It states definitively that we die and cease thinking or doing anything at Ecclesiastes 9: 5, 10. As a result of his being given life he “became a living soul” (not given soul). The basic meaning of the Hebrew word for soul is “breather” not some unseen mysterious element that floats from body to body as some who teach reincarnation espouse.
Such a belief is not in harmony with the Bible’s teaching of the resurrection.
When people say they have been reincarnated I politely listen and ask questions. I don’t like people to just throw something out there without challenging it.
I don’t believe in the existence of reincarnation.
